10 people killed, 7 missing in Mizoram landslides and floods

Aizawl (Mizoram), June 13 (IBNS): At least ten people were killed and seven others are missing following flash floods and massive landslides caused by heavy downpour that wrecked havoc in the north eastern Indian state Mizoram.

According to the reports, at least eight people were killed and six others missing in Phairuangkai and South Marpara villages in Lunglei district in flash floods.

In Aizawl, several buildings and roads were damaged in massive landslides following torrential rains.

A top official of the Public Works department of Mizoram government said that, over 100 buildings were submerged by the flood waters at Tlabung town and the water level of the Khawthlangtuipui river has been crossed danger level mark.

“The rescue team have safely evacuated over 110 families from the area,” the official said.

On the other hand, two persons died and three others injured in landslides at Zemabawk in Aizawl.

On Tuesday, over 40 houses were fully damaged in landslides and floods at Bethlehem, Bawngkawn East, Zemabawk North, Zemabawk, Bulia, Tiabung, Changpui in Aizawl district, Dapchhuah in Mamit district and some areas in Siaha district.

The top official of the Mizoram government said that, landslides and heavy downpour have blocked National Highway 54, which links the state with Assam at different places.

The north eastern Indian state witnessed worst flood in past five decades.

The power supply lines were snapped and telecommunication system disrupted in Aizawl and other parts of the state following landslides and floods.
