Mumbai/IBNS: Mumbai on Tuesday witnessed a massive jump in COVID-19 cases with 10,860 fresh infections, which is 34 percent higher than Monday, when the tally was at 8,082.

However, eighty-nine percent of those infected with the virus (9,665) are asymptomatic.

Of the total fresh cases, 834 patients required hospitalisation, the daily bulletin showed, highlighting that 52 patients needed medical oxygen support as well.

Mumbai's current surge in cases is attributed to the highly infectious Omicron variant, health experts believe.

Maharashtra has registered the highest number of cases of the Omicron variant in the country. Over 500 Omicron cases of nearly 1,900 infections so far were registered from the state.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar has said lockdown is likely to be imposed in the city if daily COVID-19 spike crosses 20,000.

"We will have to impose a lockdown in Mumbai if daily COVID cases cross the 20,000-mark," Pednekar told the media.

Pednekar said a mini lockdown is likely if people continue to gather in big numbers amid the surge in cases.
