Guwahati, May 30 (IBNS): At least nine persons, including eight minors, died and over 200 others fell ill due to suspected food poisoning after consuming rice and pork at an after-church feast in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district, officials said.

The persons, including minors, died and others fell ill after they had consumed rice and pork after attending a church gathering on Sunday at Nongkya village in the bordering district with Assam.

Ri-Bhoi district Magistrate Chinmoy P Gotmare said three persons died on Monday and another six on Tuesday in hospitals.

The top official said that, over 200 people are undergoing medical treatment.

“Among them, 80 were admitted to the Nongpoh Civil Hospital, 33 at the Umsning CHC, 23 to the Bhoilymbong health facility and the rest to the Shillong Civil Hospital, NEIGRIHMS and Ganesh Das Hospital,” the official said.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya state government has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident to ascertain what caused the deaths.

On the other hand, local villagers claimed that consuming pork had led the incident.
