New Delhi/IBNS: The government has placed an initial order of 11 million doses of Covishield manufactured by Serum Institute of India (SII), media reports said.

The first 100 million doses of the vaccine will be priced at Rs 200 each, according to a price agreement reached between the government and the Serum Institute of India (SII), said an NDTV report.

After the order, the vaccines will start rolling out of the SII's Pune facility from today night or tomorrow morning, the company said, added the report.

Covishield has been co-developed by the University of Oxford and British-Swedish company AstraZeneca in collaboration with SII.

The drug manufacturer had received nod for emergency use of Covishield from the drug regulator of the country on January 3.

According to media reports, the government plans to secure 600 million doses for Covid vaccination drive set to start from January 16.

An Indian Express report said Serum Institute has stockpiled 50 million doses for immediate distribution.

Starting Tuesday, the world's largest drug manufacturer will dispatch doses by air and road to over 20 different locations listed by the government across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chennai and other states, the report added.
