New Delhi/IBNS: India, a country of 1.3 billion people, on Friday reported over 96,000 Covid-19 cases pushing the tally of infections beyond the 52-lakh mark.

In the last 24 hours, the country has added 96,424 Novel Coronavirus cases and 1,174 deaths due to the contagion.

The overall Covid-19 tally in the country is now 52,14,678.

84,372 people who were infected with the virus have so far died since the reporting of the first Covid-19 case in the country back in late January.

More research is needed into factors that increase the risk of severe Covid-19 disease among children and adolescents, the head of the UN World Health Organization (WHO) has said, adding that while children may have largely been spared many of the most severe effects, they have suffered in other ways.

Joining the heads of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), at a press conference on Tuesday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus outlined that since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, understanding its effects on children has been a priority.

“Nine months into the pandemic, many questions remain, but we are starting to have a clearer picture. We know that children and adolescents can be infected and can infect others," he said.
