India records 37,975 new COVID-19 cases, 480 deaths

New Delhi: India, which is the second worst-hit COVID-19 nation in the world, recorded 37,975 new cases in the past 24 hours, as per Ministry of Health released data on Tuesday.

During the same period, the country also registered 480 deaths.

The total death toll due to the disease now stands at 134218.

So far, 8604955 people have been discharged from hospitals.

At the same time, there are 438667 active cases in the country right now.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a virtual meeting on Tuesday with the Chief Ministers of eight worst Covid-hit states and union territories to discuss the coronavirus situation, said a media report.

The Prime Minister is expected to ask the chief ministers the reason behind the surge in Covid-19 states and the measures taken to curb the spread of the infection, sources told NDTV.

The meeting is expected to start at 10: 30 am and be held in two parts. In the first part the PM will interact with the CMs and the LGs and in the second part he will discuss the vaccine delivery, which is also the primary focus of the meeting, added the report.

While Delhi, Kerala and Maharashtra continue to report the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the country, many smaller states like Manipur, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat are witnessing a sudden spike in fresh infections.

The number of coronavirus cases confirmed all over the world has surpassed 59 million.

According to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University’s Coronavirus Resource Center.The global death toll from COVID-19 stands at 1,394,694. The number of recovered individuals stands at 37,691,380.

The United States, India and Brazil remain the top three countries in terms of the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases. France comes fourth and Russia is fifth.

The US has registered more than 12 million COVID-19 cases and has the largest COVID-19 death toll of all the countries in the world (more than 257,500).
