New Delhi/IBNS: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday met World Health Organisation (WHO) Chief Scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan to hold discussion over the global health body's approval for Bharat Biotech's COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin.

He also informed that the WHO chief scientist lauded India's effort in combating COVID-19.

In a tweet, Mandaviya said: "Held a meeting with Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist of @WHO. We had a productive discussion on WHO's approval of @BharatBiotech''s COVAXIN. @DoctorSoumya also appreciated India's efforts for the containment of #COVID19."

Earlier in May, Bharat Biotech had said regulatory approvals for its indigenously developed Covid-19 vaccine are in process in more than 60 countries including the US, Brazil and Hungary.

Emergency use authorisations (EUA) have been obtained from 13 countries with more to follow, Bharat Biotech had informed.

It had also submitted an application to the WHO to get a EUL (Emergency Use Listing) for indigenously developed Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin and regulatory approvals are expected by Jul-Sept 2021.

The indigenous Covaxin vaccine is co-developed by Bharat Biotech and ICMR, Dr Raches said the Government placed an advanced purchase order of rupees 1500 crore and this will help our company to increase our risk appetite and that is why we are expanding to Bangalore and Gujarat.
