Delhi's daily Covid cases see 36 percent jump in 24 hours at 1,796

New Delhi/IBNS: The national capital recorded 1,796 fresh COVID infections in the last 24 hours, a massive jump of 36 percent compared to yesterday's cases, which was at 1,313.

The surge in cases nationwide is believed to be driven by the Omicron variant, which is considered to be much more contagious.

The new variant is gradually spreading in the community and it has been found in 54 percent of the latest samples analysed in Delhi, the state's Health Minister Satyendar Jain said on Thursday.

The Arvind Kejriwal government has already tried to ensure strict curbs across the national capital, including a ban on New Year's gatherings and events.

Schools and cinemas have been shut again among other curbs under the "yellow alert".
