COVID-19 Situation: China suspends entry of foreigners travelling from Canada temporarily

Ottawa/UNI: China has temporarily barred foreign nationals travelling from Canada, the Consulate General of The People's Republic of China in Toronto said.

"In view of the current COVID-19 situation and the need of epidemic prevention and control, new adjustments have been applied with regard to entry into China of foreign nationals in Canada holding valid Chinese residence permits. According to the new adjustments, all foreign nationals who hold valid Chinese residence permits for work, personal matters and reunion are temporarily not allowed to enter China from Canada," the consulate said in a statement.

Entry with diplomatic, service, courtesy or C visas will not be affected, it added.

The development came after the Canada announced a slew of measures to crack down on the spread of the coronavirus.

Now, travellers arriving in the country will undergo compulsory Covid-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday had also urged its citizens to avoid all forms of non-essential travel.

The suspension is a temporary measure that China has to take in light of the current pandemic situation, the statement concluded.
