Burnpur, Sept 16 (IBNS): Within a year of its start, the new Blast Furnace "Kalyani" at IISCO Steel Plant touched the magical figure of producing 1 (one) million tons of hot metal on Wednesday.

The country's largest Blast Furnace that was “blown in” on 30 November last year has a useful volume of 4160 cubic meters, and can produce about 8000 tons of hot metal per day. It has been built by POSCO (Engineering and Construction), South Korea and NCC Ltd, India.

"The proud moment was witnessed by ED(F&A) Sudhir Kumar, EDi/c(Proj & SGW Kulti) R N Das, ED(MM) Himadri Bhattacharya, ED(Works) Rajesh K Rathi, ED(Proj) Arun K Rath, GM(Blast Furnace) Pawan K Singh, GM(Proj) G Vishwanadham and senior officials," read a statement issued byu the organization.

With an enhanced campaign life of 20 years, it is equipped with systems such as pulverized coal injection, cast house fume extraction, cast house slag granulation, high top pressure operation coupled with top pressure recovery turbine, twin material bin bell-less top, waste heat recovery and conveyor belt charging system.

It incorporates level II automation and has twin flat cast house with four tap holes.

The environment-friendly furnace ensures minimum emissions and recovers waste energy to the fullest; it also has a closed-loop cooling system resulting in almost zero water discharge.
