New Delhi, Sept 15 (IBNS): Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement with the Government of India to provide grant aid of up to 2,240 million yen (approximately INR 130 crores) for “The Project for Construction of the International Cooperation and Convention Centre in Varanasi”.

The Varanasi International Cooperation and Convention Centre (VCC) was mentioned in the Japan-India Joint Statement in November 2016 where Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appreciated Japan’s efforts to support the construction of the Convention Centre in Varanasi and recognized its symbolic importance as a sign of strengthening bilateral ties.

This year the two Prime Ministers revealed the designs of VCC on the occasion of their annual summit held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The VCC will function as a platform providing the opportunities for social, cultural interactions and knowledge exchange for the public, thereby contributing to the social-economic development of Varanasi.

The grant agreement was signed between Takema Sakamoto, Chief Representative, JICA India Office and S. Selvakumar, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

Speaking on the occasion, Takema Sakamoto, Chief Representative, JICA India Office said, "The Varanasi International Cooperation and Convention Centre will be one of the prime examples of state-of-the-art facility nurturing the cultural and social exchanges and knowledge sharing amongst the various domestic and international participants that gather here. It is expected not only to enhance the stature of Varanasi but also to add even more attractiveness to its historic heritage.”

VCC will be a sophisticated convention centre comprising of a main hall with a full flying tower, having a seating capacity of 1,200, a gallery, meeting rooms, together with a parking facility of 120 cars. The main hall may be partitioned into smaller spaces, when required.

VCC is also planned to be a green building, fit for Level 3 of Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA). VCC is envisaged to be equipped with adequate security and safety systems, with a regular entrance, service entrance and a separate VIP entrance, making it an ideal destination for holding all types of conventions.

JICA has already extended 305,060 million Japanese Yen (approximately INR 18,000 crores) through ODA loans since 1984 for comprehensive development efforts of Uttar Pradesh state.
