Good science films is the need of the hour: Keshari Nath Tripathi 7th National Science Film Festival inaugurated in Kolkata
On the occasion, Tripathi stated, development of scientific temper, reasoning ability and rationality is a fundamental duty of the citizens and that good science films made in simple yet appealing manner, highlighting issues related to science, technology, environment and health is the need of the hour.
Hence, he praised the joint initiative of Vigyan Prasar and National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), the two Central Government bodies, for organising science film festivals over the last seven years and thereby providing a stage for interaction and collaboration between science communicators, renowned as well as budding film-makers who are interested in the cause of presenting science to common people through the attractive audio-visual medium of films. The Governor further remarked that films and television play a vital role in development of society and thus science films can play an even more important educative role.
Famous science communicator, Prof. Partho S. Ghosh, who is also the Chairman of Jury members in this year’s festival remarked that in many Hollywood films, science film makers had collaborated with scientists and science professionals to add a touch of accuracy in their films.
The National Science Film Festival and Competition provides a platform to talented film-makers across the country to showcase their artistic work, he added.
Earlier, the festival was held in Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Bangalore, Lucknow and Mumbai and received overwhelming response from foreign countries too.
In this year’s festival to be held from Feb 14- 18 February in the city, a total of 70 films will be screened. Out of it, 53 films on science, technology, health and environment categories will compete for winning the National Beaver Awards in which prize money totalling more than Rs 8 lakhs will be given out.
The dignitaries present on the occasion included the Director-General of NCSM A.S. Manekar, Director of Birla Industrial and Technological Museum Shri Emdadul Haque, Director of Vigyan Prasar Dr. R. Gopichandran and eminent film-maker Shri Goutam Ghosh among others.
