Monsoon rains paralyse daily lives of people in Maharashtra
Mumbai July 27 (IBNS) : Hundreds of passengers in Mumbai-Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Express were left stranded without food and drinking water for the last 15 hours as monsoon rains created furore at Vangani.
Most of the areas of Badlapur, Ulhasnagar, Vangani were submerged as heavy rain battered the region, flooding local rivers and other water bodies
Two military helicopters and six boats of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were sent in to rescue the effected passengers. Railways cautioned the passengers against stepping out of the stranded train, as water levels outside rose above danger mark, and requested them to wait for help.
Earlier, the passengers of Mahalaxmi Express appealed for help with videos shot on cellphones and social media to the Railways as well as to the state government.
Maharashtra minister Eknath Gaikwad said that two helicopters will help the rescue operation along with six teams of the National Disaster Response Force or NDRF on the ground from Mumbai, Thane and Pune which are rushing there with inflatable rubber boats shortly.
Air and rail traffic were disrupted in Mumbai due to heavy rains. Eleven flights were cancelled this morning at the Mumbai airport with several flights being diverted. On streets, residents waded through waist-deep water in many areas.
The hub of India's financial and entertainment industry, Mumbai, struggles to cope with monsoon rains every year, as widespread construction and garbage-clogged drains and waterways make it increasingly vulnerable to chaos.
