Assam floods: 58 deaths, 23 lakh people impacted, hundreds homeless as Brahmaputra, other rivers cross danger mark
Guwahati: The floods in Assam over the past month have resulted in 58 deaths and impacted 23 lakh people, leaving hundreds homeless and displaced, media reported.
Water levels of the Brahmaputra and nine other rivers have crossed the danger mark in Neamatighat, Tezpur, Dhubri, and Goalpara.
Despite most rivers being swollen, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that water levels are gradually receding, according to ANI.
A total of 577 relief camps have been set up across 27 districts, providing shelter to over 5,26,000 people.
Distribution centers for food and other aid have also been established.
The ASDMA reported that on July 6, two people drowned in the floodwaters in Charaideo district, and one person each died in Goalpara, Morigaon, Sonitpur, and Tinsukia districts.
Dhubri district is the worst affected, followed by Cachar and Darrang.
The ASDMA reported that 2.396 million people across 29 districts are affected by this second wave of floods.
In Dhubri, 797,918 people have been affected, followed by 175,231 in Cachar, 163,218 in Darrang, 131,246 in Barpeta, 109,470 in Golaghat, 105,372 in Nalbari, and 100,926 in South Salmara district.
The chief minister visited the grieving parents of Abhinash Sarkar in Jyotinagar, Guwahati, on Saturday to offer condolences after their son went missing during the floods, having fallen into a drain near a temple.
Sarma also inspected the accident site and reviewed the ongoing search efforts, urging the concerned departments and teams to intensify their search for the child.
On Friday, the chief minister also visited Dibrugarh to assess the flood situation and seek community-driven solutions to the waterlogged areas.
