Sad Day for Cricket: Sachin Tendulkar

India Blooms News Service | | 27 Nov 2014, 08:03 pm
Sydney, Nov 27 (IBNS): The tragic untimely demise of Australia batsman Philip Hughes was described as a "sad day for cricket" by batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar.
Hughes played alongside Sachin in Indian Premier League (IPL), since he was part of Mumbai Indians squad.

Remembering his 25-year-old team-mate Tendulkar paid his "deepest condolences" to the Hughes family on Thursday.

The icon said that he was shocked to hear of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes' death.

"Shocked to hear about Phil. Sad day for cricket," said Tendulkar.

"Deepest condolences to family, friends and well wishers. RIP," Tendulkar said on Twitter of his former Mumbai Indians teammate.

Not only Sachin, condolences poured in from the whole cricketing fraternity.

Another former captain Anil Kumble, who serves as mentor of the Mumbai Indians franchise, tweeted: "Sad day for cricket. Phil Hughes RIP. Knew him whilst he came over to Mumbai Indians. Thorough pro..will miss you."

Batting great Sunil Gavaskar said his immediate reaction was "one of profound sadness".

"No one wants to hear such news about a sportsman, let alone a cricketer," the former opening batsman told NDTV. "My condolences to his family and the Australian cricketing fraternity."

"You learn to bear the pain," he said. "But this was a freakish accident. One should not blame helmet manufacturers for this. Many a time a batsman has been hit on the helmet and nothing happened because he was wearing one," he added.

"Dark day for cricket. Can't believe Phil Hughes has gone! RIP my friend. My heart goes out to his family. Shocking," All-rounder Yuvraj Singh tweeted.

Micro-blogging site twitter was flooded with messages.

Visiting Indian team's captain for First test Virat Kohli said, "Shocked and saddened by the news of Phil Hughes. Horrible day for cricket. RIP Phil and may your family gain the strength to cope. [sic]"
