JU students arrested for staging protest in campus

Kolkata, Sep 17 (IBNS): At least 35 students of Kolkata’s prestigious Jadavpur University (JU) were arrested at around 2 am on Tuesday night for staging protests in front of the main administrative building within the campus.

Students alleged that their members were dragged, manhandled by the police officers. They claimed activists from the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, the student's arm of West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress, also came in with the police.

A section of JU students were staging a sit-in demonstration at the main administrative building of the university since last Wednesday demanding a probe into the alleged molestation of a second-year student by students from the university.

A large group of students also surrounded the vice-chancellor and other faculty members on Tuesday.

Sources said the vice-chancellor was believed to have called the police to disperse the agitators.

Protesting the police action, students blocked a major crossing in front of the Jadavpur police station for hours that continued till Wednesday morning. They also filed a complaint against police officers for molestation and against the university vice-chancellor for calling the police in the campus.
