Kolkata, Feb 12 (IBNS): West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s student wing leader Kanishka Mukherjee, who was earlier held for hitting another car and injuring a man on Thursday night near Gariahat area, got bail on Friday from Kolkata court, even as the street dweller injured in the crash died.

The speeding Mahindra Scorpio car (WB 06 J 4655) of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP)' leader Kanishka Mukherjee on Thursday night lost its control on Bijon Setu near Gariahat area and hit another car.

A street dweller was badly injured after being hit by the speeding car and died on Friday in a hospital.

"The car was coming very fast from Kasba side. It lost control at the middle of Bijon Setu and hit the guardrail at first. Then it hit a Swift Dzire car. The Swift Dzire  also lost its control and hit another taxi. A street dweller was also hit by the speeding car. After the accident, the driver tried to escape from the spot, taking a u-turn," one eye-witness told IBNS.

Reports said Kanishka Mukherjee tried to flee from the spot with his vehicle, but police from the Gariahat Police Station arrested him later. His SUV was also seized.

He was charged under several bailable IPC sections including 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427 (Mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees or upwards).

However, the TMCP leader was produced in the Alipore Court in Kolkata on Friday and granted bail on a security bond of Rs. 500 only. Surprisingly, police did not inform the court that one man was killed, after being hit by the car.
