New Delhi, July 31 (IBNS): Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley slammed Rahul Gandhi who attacked the Centre on Friday over the appointment of television actor Gajendra Chauhan as the new chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune.

Jaitley tweeted, "Does Rahul Gandhi's statement at FTII, Pune about " Mediocrity on the Top" also apply to the Congress Party."

Gandhi interacted with the  students of the FTII who are  on strike over the appointment of the new chairman.

Speaking to the students, Rahul said, "This is not just about your institute. It is happening across the board-in our education system and our bureaucracy too."

"A single idea of our country is being promoted and all those who disagree are being silenced," he said.

He said: "It does not do any good to the Govt of India if student voices are suppressed."

Gandhi said: "The students are only asking for their voice to be heard. It will not make the Govt smaller if they have a discussion."

Criticising Rahul's interference, actor Paresh Rawal told reporters, " I want to ask to the students of FTII that if they don't see a chairman like quality in Gajendra, then do they see their chairman in Rahul Gandhi?"

The students are protesting over the appointment of actor Gajendra Chauhan as the new chairman of the institution for over two month now.

The students of the prestigious institute have questioned the process of selecting Chauhan for the post who is also a member of the ruling BJP party.

Chauhan was well known for playing the role of  "Yudhishthira" in the popular Indian TV serial Mahabharat.
