Singapore, Sep 1 (IBNS): The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on Thursday that 13 Indians tested positive for the Zika virus in Singapore, according to media reports.

On Sunday, Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) had confirmed an outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease with 41 cases of locally transmitted Zika virus reported; of these, 36 cases were detected among foreign construction workers.

The Ministry said in a statement, " Of these cases, 36 were identified through active testing of potentially infected persons."

"All the cases are residents or workers in the Aljunied Crescent/ Sims Drive area," it said. "They are not known to have travelled to Zika-affected areas recently, and are thus likely to have been infected in Singapore," the Ministry said.

Zika virus disease is caused by a virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes.

According to World Health Organisation, people with Zika virus disease can have symptoms including mild fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise or headache. These symptoms normally last for 2-7 days.
