Health department and UNICEF organizes Diarrhea Control Fortnight in Budge Budge

Kolkata, July 28 (IBNS): The West Bengal health department, along with the UNICEF, launched an Intensified Diarrhea Control Fortnight (IDCF) at Budge Budge area in South 24-Parganas district on Monday.

The event will be observed till Aug 8.

“One of the primary reasons of the increase in infant mortality rate in our state is due to diarrhea. In this  fourteen days long awareness campaign our main focus will be to educated and inform the common people about the causes of diarrhea and how to treat a patient suffering from it,” said Dr. Asim Das Malakar, Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH), South 24-Parganas.

Dr. Kaninika Mitra, Health Specialist, UNICEF, West Bengal said: “ The whole campaign is divided into two segments. During the first five days, our health workers will go door- to- door  to educate people about diarrhea and distribute ORS and Zinc tablets to families with children’s under five years. The second phase will focus on educating mothers about the procedures of baby feeding as improper feeding habits may also lead to diarrhea.”

“Our main aim will be to decrease the number of deaths due to diarrhea,” she added.

Apart from the local health body, workers of Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA), ICDS and Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery would go door to door, educating and informing people and distributing ORS and Zinc tablets to families with Children under the age of five years.
