FBI arrests one in 1996 murder

Chicago, Oct 6 (IBNS) Nearly 16 years to the day that Sergeant Gregory Keith Martin was murdered, the Jonesville Police Department, Elkin Police Department, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced an arrest in connection with the case.

Martin was shot and killed on Oct 5, 1996, at approximately 2:42 a.m., while conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 77 South in Yadkin County, North Carolina.

He was shot multiple times and left for dead on the shoulder of the highway. Sgt. Martin’s duty weapon was found in his holster, the officer not having had time to defend himself.

On Oct 3, 36-year-old Scott Vincent Sica was arrested in Cape Coral, Florida, and charged with first-degree murder.

A joint investigative effort obtained information and physical evidence that led to Sica’s arrest.

At a news conference in Jonesville, Chief Roger Reece said, “Sixteen years’ worth of work has gone into solving this case. Sergeant Martin’s murder has haunted this community, this police department, and the members of the law enforcement agencies here with me today.

"We must do everything we can for the judicial process to proceed successfully, both for our investigation and for the rights of the accused in this case.”

The joint investigation by members of the Jonesville Police Department, Elkin Police Department, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation is ongoing.
