India suffer batting collapse against England

Mumbai, Nov 25 (IBNS): A batting collapse in the second innings left India staring an embarrassing defeat as they lead just by 31 runs with three wickets in hand against England on the third day of the second Test at the Wankhede Stadium here Sunday.


England, resuming the day at 178 for two, were bowled out for 413 in the second innings shortly before the tea. In all 15 wickets fell as spinners ruled the day.

Indian batsmen then crumbled in just 33 overs against the left-arm spin of Monty Panesar, who picked up his second five-wicket haul in the match. Panesar bagged five for 61 and off-spinner Graeme Swann got two for 39 to leave India struggling at 117 for seven.

The only notable scorer was opening batsman Gautam Gambhir, who remained unbeaten on 53 with Harbhajan Singh on eight.

Earlier, England who rode on the brilliant centuries of Kevin Pietersen and Alastair Cook as the visitor's gained a crucial 86-run lead.

Overnight batsman, Pietersen (186) and Cook (122) notched up their 22nd Test centuries in a dominating fashion to lead England's charge. Cook struck 13 fours and a six during his 270-ball knock while Pietersen hit 20 fours and four fours in his 233-ball knock.

In reply, Virender Sehwag (9), Cheteshwar Pujara (6), Sachin Tendulkar (8), Virat Kohli (7), Yuvraj Singh (8), captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (6) and Ravichandran Ashwin (11).

Panesar, who bagged five wickets in the first innings, extracted a lot of spin and bounce to trouble the Indian batsmen.
