Andaman Marathon gets 750 runners

Port Blair, Nov 19 (IBNS): The second edition of Amway Andaman Marathon on Sunday witnessed overwhelming response from 750 participants from the Andaman Islands as well as different parts of India.


Participation of marathon runners from Kenya and Ethiopia had accorded the second edition of Amway Andaman Marathon an international look.

The second edition of Amway Andaman Marathon was flagged off by Anand Prakash, Chief Secretary, A&N, actor Rahul Bose and William S Pinckney , MD & CEO, Amway India, from Cellular Jail at 5.15 am in the morning on Sunday.

This year half marathon 21 km has been also introduced along with the continuation of 10 km marathon as well.

William S Pinckney, MD & CEO, Amway India, said, "We were overwhelmed with the huge response from the sport enthusiasts that even witnessed runners from Kenya and Ethiopia this time, transforming Amway Andaman Marathon to a global event in the tourism map."

The second edition of Andaman Marathon was also aimed at a clean and green Andamans.

Rahul Bose commented, “Andaman is the third home to me and has an emotional connect Post Tsunami days.

"I hope Amway Andaman Marathon would epitomize cultural equality and would assume a cult status in another five years. I am confident that it will attract 10,000 people in three years.”

The total prize money for the winners was raised to Rs 6.6 Lakh in the second edition from Rs 2.6 Lakh last year.

Results of Amway Andaman Marathon:

Men’s section, Half Marathon

1: David Kiptoo Kiprorich – Rs 1 lakh – from Kenya

2. Asfawe Minaleshewa – Rs 50,000 – from Ethiopia

3. Peter Ndegwa- Rs 30,000 -Ethiopia

Women’s section- Half Marathon -21 km

1. Tsiee Tadesse Mangistu – Rs 1 Lakh - kenya

2. Virgina Njeri - Rs 50,000 - Kenya

3. Sandhya Kispotta- Rs 30,000 India

Special Recognition : Indian winner half marathon 21 km

1) Hawalder Awadesh Kumar – who came fourth – Rs 30,000

Also first runner up (Indian winner ) was presented Rs 20,000 cash prize, Amway gift hampers.

Men’s section, 10 Km Marathon

1: Shailesh kumar Yadav – Rs 40,000

2. Rajiv Kumar – Rs 20,000

3. Balwant Singh - Rs 15000

Women’s section- 10k Marathon

Jeromina Xaka-1st

Ganga Devi – 2nd

Dhanlakshmi – 3rd ( from A& N police)

Above the Age of 50 (Male)- 10 km marathon

Sali Muthu – Rs 40,000

S K Roy – Rs 20,000

M. Sivalingam – Rs 15000

Above the Age of 40 (Female)-10 km

Rajbala Sharma- Rs 40,000

Flower Let Joseph- Rs 20,000

Srimati Bishnoi- Rs 15000
