Kolkata, Dec 7 (IBNS): IM Vidit Santosh Gujrathi (FIDE rating 2527) of Pune made a sensational win on Round-5 over the overnight leader GM Dzhumaev Marat (2530) of Uzbekistan at Rose Valley Open International Chess Tournament being held in Kolkata.

As in the seeding list 18th seed Vidit is just behind the 17th seed Marat, expert would not consider today’s result as upset, but the 18-yr boy vowed not to content with Friday’s great win.

Now after the Round-5 Vidit took pole-one position with 4.5 points. Having checked in last two rounds, top seed GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek (2734) of Poland of the Rose Valley Open International Chess Tournament, organized by Alekhine Chess Club, again found his winning touch.

He had a short work over against GM Mikhailo Oleksienko (2573) of Ukraine, who was in the second position along with Vidit after Day-4. Now with 4 points Radoslaw is jointly in the second position along with GM Marat and others.

What should be an interesting game between GM Deep Sengupta (2540) of Bengal and IM Debashis Das (2464) of Odisha, ended in a lackluster draw as no one wanted to take risk.

Winner of U12 World Chess Championship in 2000, Deep was originally of Jharkhand, a product of Chakradharpur Chess Academy, but now settled in Kolkata.

19-yr-old promising boy Debashis is the product Odisha’s improved chess infrastructure, lot of kids are showing their talents in different national and international tournament as Odisha government, is taking care for the development of chess.

For the second consecutive day GM Suryasekhar Ganguly (2630) failed to earn full point.

His compatriot GM Arun Prasad (2513) snatched half point from him. However he remained in the joint third position with 3.5 points along with Deep and others.

Paring with a lowly rated player Shreyans K Shah (2231) helped GM Sandipan Chanda (2613) to find his winning touch without sweating much.

WGW Mary Ann Gomes (2382) also won her match against S Ravi Teja (2296) and WGM Nisha Mohota (2339) shared point with Sidhant Mohapatra (2222) of Odisha.

IM Suvrajit Saha (2338) failed to take advantage to raise his point against lowly rated player Pratik Patil (2185).

Same thing happened in the case IM Saptarshi Roy (2402), who drew with K Praneeth Surya (2246).

FM Diptayan Ghosh (2425) of Alekhine Chess Club had a good win Friday, after Thursday’s setback, over compatriot IM Aditya Udeshi (2376), who was in good form before today’s slide.

But another promising boy from Alekhine Chess Club, ex-World U12 champion FM Sayantan Das (2312) lost the close battle to IM G Akash (2404).

GM MR Venkatesh (2520), who checked Thursday top seed Radoslaw by snatching half point, Friday also showed his mettle by stopping Chinese “Super GM” Ni Hua’s (2660) good run. Venkatesh and Ni Hua joined the third position with 3.5 points each.

Actually as mentioned earlier, Tamil Nadu boys were here to captivate the chances to play a strong tournament. GM GN Gopal (2547) toppled his state-mate IM Shyam Sundar (2484) to join the top seed in the second position with 4 points.

Local IM Arghyadip Das withdrew from the tournament citing personal reason.
