Open Chess: Surya keeps head high

India Blooms News Service

Kolkata, Dec 4 (IBNS): The second day of Rose Valley Open International Chess Tournament, organized by Alekhine Chess Club, continued to be another upsetting day.

15-year-old boy from Shirdi FM Shardul Garare (FIDE Rating 2381) and Ex U-12 world chess champion IM Srinath Narayanan (2439) of Tamilnadu caused a big upset when they overwhelmed GM Adly Ahmed (2607) of Egypt and 10th seed David Alberto (2607) of Italy respectively in the second round.

Two star attractions of the tournament, top seed GM Radoslav Wojtaszek (2734) of Poland and GM Suryasekhar Ganguly (2630) however kept their head high on a day of upsets.

World Junior champion 4th seed GM Abhijit Gupta (2662), who brushed aside WGM Mary Ann Gomes on Monday, on Tuesday did not take any risk against Russian GM Alexander Fominyh, who much below his rating (2455).

They had short work to share points. Rather Indian IM Vishnu Prasanna (2469) made a upset by snatching half point from “Super GM” 2nd seed Anton Korobov (2702)of Ukrain.

Title aspirant Suryasekhar on Tuesday did not have to sweat much to overcome Shreyans K Shah (2231) even with black pieces.

One of the weakest players of the tournament Shreyans played with King’s Indian open, which is very favorite opening of 5-time World Champion V Anand.

Working as Anand’s second for last four years, Suryasekhar is well aware of different variation to counter such opening.

So leader of the Bengal Brigade took little time to smash his opponent in just 27 moves.

The result of Tuesday certainly much relieve to Surya, because he had to play yesterday a marathon innings of 88 moves against Indian IM BS Shivananada (2381), yet failed to earn full point.

Shivananada had done yet another upset, when he again raised his performance against 8th seed GM Sandipan Chanda (2613).

Sandipan gave up hope of breaking Shivananada’s resistance and conceded half point after 41 moves.

Another GM of Bengal Deep Sengupta (2540) also failed to break the defense of lowly rated Indian FM Anurag Mhamal (2370). However two WGMs from Bengal, national women champion Mary Ann Gomes (2382) and Nisha Mohta (2339) could be able open their account with half point each.

Day 2 of this high profile tournament did not turn up as a good day for Bengal boys, as promising and youngest IM of the country Diptayan Ghosh (2425), IM Saptarshi Roy (2402), IM Arghyadip Das (2476) and IM Suvrajit Saha (2338) lost their respective games to GM Paragua Mark (2533) of Philippines, GM Dzhumaev Marat (2530), FM Arvindh Chithabaram (2338) and GM Arun Prasad (2513).

Diminutive 13 year class VIII boy of Tamil Nadu had a thumping victory over higher rated Arghyadip in 34 moves.

Another very talented boy of Bengal, ex U-12 world champion FM Sayantan Das (2312) had a bad day, as he lost the battle against Indian IM Akshayraj Kore (2459).
