Pune, Nov 3 (IBNS): Yavin Soloman of Maharashtra and Mohit Bhardwaj of Delhi on Saturday scored hard-fought wins to make it to the final qualifying round of the boys singles event at the Walchand Cup National Series U-16 tennis tournament being organised and hosted by Deccan Gymkhana.
The Walchand Cup, the junior ranking tennis event on the National circuit is set to unfold its fifth straight year of existence in the city next week, the final qualifying rounds for which would be played on Sunday.
In the second round qualifying action, Soloman accounted for State-mate Aditya Deshpande 9-8 (7-4) in a best of 17 games match.
Bhardwaj edged past Rajasthan’s Abhimanyu Rawat by exactly the same margin to make it to the next round of qualifying event.
Local boy Yash Agarwal made a good start to his qualification campaign by knocking out State-mate Anant Mishra 9-1.
On the girls side, the toughest matches were won by Amreen Naaz of Andhra and Maharashtra’s Pragati Solankar, both girls winning their respective matches with an identical 9-7 margin.
National Series is the highest level of the tournament structure of the All India Tennis Association in the junior circuit, and Walchand Cup is the only event of such magnitude that city has witnessed this year.
The main draw matches, which would include boys U-16 and girls U-16 singles as well as doubles, would begin on Monday.
