Auckland, Jan 31 (IBNS) New Zealand police have began a homicide probe into the death of an Indian origin taxi driver in Auckland on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred amidst growing racial attacks on Indians in Australia but New Zealand is a peace haven for Indians settled there with none ever crying racism or any harassment.
New Zealand Herald, a prominent daily, reported that a homicide inquiry has been launched following the death of the taxi driver in View Road, Mt Eden, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The victim has been identified as Hiren Mohini, a 39-year-old Mt Roskill resident.
A post mortem examination carried out revealed Mohini had a stab wound to his torso.
The New Zealand Herald report said: “Mr Mohini was driving an Auckland Co-op taxi, which veered off the road and hit a tree around 1.30am. Other taxis arrived at the scene within minutes after an internal emergency device inside the taxi was triggered on impact.”
View Road residents who were woken by the crash rushed to help Mohini and remove him from the vehicle. Emergency services were also called but he died at the scene.
Police is quizzing witnesses and wants to speak to a young male who was seen running towards Esplanade Road immediately after the crash.
The man they are seeking is described as a slimly-built, dark-skinned male in his mid to late twenties with long, greasy hair to the back of his neck, the paper said.
Police believed the man hired Mohini's taxi in the CBD at about 1.20am and they are assessing security surveillance footage for more information.
Meanwhile, The Indian Weekender of New Zealand said Mohini had moved to New Zealand from Mumbai in about 2003.
His close friend and schoolmate from Goregaon, Mumbai, Sachin Jadhav told Indian Weekender he was driving his taxi for the past four years.
