Ahmedabad, Mar 24 (IBNS): Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is expected to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the 2002 communal riots, on March 27.
Media reports, quoting sources, said on Wednesday that Modi shall appear for questioning by the SIT as per the summons on Saturday.
He has, however, reportedly raised question at the propriety of the SIT interrogating him when an appeal on the legality of its probe is pending before the Supreme Court.
Earlier, confusion had prevailed over the date on which the SIT had summoned him, with Modi maintaining that the SIT had not specified March 21 as the date for appearance.
This is the first time that the SIT has called Modi for questioning in the 2002 riots case.
The summons have been issued on the basis of a complaint filed by Zakia Jaffery, widow of former Congress MP Eshan Jaffery, who was killed in Gulbury Society riot case in 2002.
The infamous Gujarat riots of 2002 left hundreds of Muslims dead, injured and tortured and came as a blot in the BJP rule. The riots followed an incident of train burning in Godhra in which Hindus returning from Ayodhya were killed by a Muslim mob.
