New Delhi, Feb 22 (IBNS) President Pratibha Patil on Monday said India needs to fight Maoists and cross-border terrorism with immediacy.
In her address marking the beginning of the budget session of Parliament, Patil said: “India need to fight the growing red menace and cross-border terrorism.”
Describing the Maoist attack on a West Bengal paramilitary camp as ‘cowardly’, Patil said: “Such senseless violence has strengthened the governmnet’s resolved to tackle it with added vigour.”
Patil further said Maoists are a major threat to India’s internal security.
“Government is ready to hold talks with the Maoists. We urge the Maoists to give up violence and accept the government’s offer to hold talks,” Patil said in her address.
Taking up cross-border terrorism issues, Patil said infiltration via Jammu and Kashmir is on the rise.
“Infiltration of terrorists from across the Line of Control (LOC) in Jammu and Kashmir is increasing. However the government remains vigilant against all forms of challenges posed by terrorism.”
Patil once again made it clear that India has adopted a ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards terrorism.
“Zero tolerance of terrorist activities is our principal policy. We have to keep constant watch and innovate against global terrorist groups," she said.
Patil also condemned the blast at German Bakery in Pune on Feb 13 that claimed over 13 lives.
"To meet the grave challenge faced by terrorism, India needs to strengthen its security apparatus.
“These include strengthening of state and district police machinery and Central paramilitary forces, operationalization of NIA, establishment of four NSG hubs to ensure quick and effective response to any possible terror attack, augmentation of strength of the Intelligence Bureau, strengthening of Multi-Agency Centre in the IB to enable it to function on a round-the-clock basis, and strengthening of coastal security,” Patil said.
During the session, the Railway Budget will be tabled on Feb 24, followed by the Economic Survey on Feb 25, and finally, the General Budget 2010 on Feb 26.
