With Trinamool Congress stealing the show with Singur, Congress geared up for some action as they marched towards the plant Thursday demanding return of the farmland of the unwilling farmers.
Congress workers said they were beaten up when they tried to march towards the plant in Singur, 40 km from here.
Police denied baton-charge but said the protestors were prevented from agitating near the plant.
“No one was injured. They blocked a highway near the project for hours and then dispersed,” Inspector General of Police Raj Kanojia said.
TV footage, however, showed scenes of clashes and injured Congress workers. Some camerapersons were also injured.
“There was no prohibitory order near the plant. Police rained batons on us leaving dozens of us injured,” said Abdul Mannan, the Congress leader who led the march.
Protesters have occasionally tried to stop work at the factory and fought with workers. An engineer had to be taken to hospital after his car was stoned last month.
West Bengal's CPI-M led communist government on Tuesday began talking to leaders of Trinamool Congress, the state's main opposition, which has been championing a movement by farmers unwilling to give their land.
Tata Motors plans to launch the Nano later this year from Singur.
