Lucknow, Mar 20 (IBNS): The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday sacked 145 of its 639 public prosecutors, media reports said.
The law department alleged that the government has found the performance of these lawyers "unsatisfactory" and cited that as the reason for them being dismissed.
"The performance of public prosecutors is assessed from time and time and those whose services are not found up to the mark are removed", it reportedly said.
According to a CNN IBN report, this move may be UP chief minister Mayawati's bid to return to the Dalit agenda since most of the lawyers who were removed are close to BSP national secretary S C Mishra, the party's Brahmin face.
Mayawati may be wanting to remove the group of upper caste people from her party, which gets the bulk of its support from Dalits, analysts said.
