Putin signs defence pacts with India

New Delhi, Mar 12 (IBNS): Russian Prime Minister Vladamir Putin on Friday asserted that his country will not enter into any defence deal with Pakistan even as it signed several defence pacts, including treaties on nuclear co-operation, with India.
Russia will not sign any defence deal with Pakistan because of our Indian friends’ concerns, Putin said here.
He is on a day-long visit to India and held discussions with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, besides calling on other top leaders.
Afghanistan also figured in the discussions between Putin and Singh and both the countries agreed to intensify their consultations on Afghanistan and meet the challenges posed by terrorism and extremism in the region.
Meanwhile, India and Russia finalized 19 deals, including pacts on nuclear cooperation. The purchase of 29 MiG-29 fighters and the revised agreement on Gorshkov aircraft carrier, a deal which was stuck for three years over price, was also finalized.
In civil nuclear field, Russia will build 12 atomic plants – six in Kudankulam and six in Haripur – as per the pacts signed.
These pacts are agreements on cooperation in the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes and agreement on road map for the serial construction of Russian designed nuclear power plants.
An MoU was also signed on Nuclear Power between NPCIL and Atomstroy Export for construction of third and fourth atomic plant in Kudankulum in Tamil Nadu.
The revised agreement on Gorshkov aircraft carrier deal was also signed. The deal had initially been signed in 2004 at the cost of $1.5 billion, along with 16 MiG-29Ks, which the Russians hiked to $2.9 billion later. The deal was finally sealed at $2.34 billion.
