New Delhi, Mar 11 (IBNS) Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee is opposed to an Indo-Russian nuclear power collaboration because the deal will involve the building of a plant at Haripur in coastal West Bengal and "cause largescale eviction and land acquisition", reports said on Thursday.
Media reports quoting unnamed party sources said Trinamool Congress would put pressure on the government to refrain from signing the deal with Russia during the visit of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Friday.
Vladimir Putin, will arrive in New Delhi on a working visit on March 12 at the invitation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Prime Minister Putin will be accompanied by an official delegation comprising senior members of the Russian Government and several business leaders.
Putin will hold talks with Prime Minister Singh on a range of issues of bilateral interest.
The Indian Government has earlier approved plans for the nuclear power plant to be built jointly with Russia in Haripur in East Midnapore district of West Bengal.
Haripur is expected to have six nuclear reactors each of 1650 MW- a total installed capacity of 10,000 MW of electricity.
Haripur, located about 170 km from Kolkata, has a population of about 80,000 people comprising farmers and fishermen.
