Howrah, Jan 9 (IBNS): Five children of a family were charred to death at Bagnan in Howrah in the night between Friday and Saturday.
A couple with their seven children were asleep in their thatched hut when the house caught fire from a burning lamp, local TV reports said.
When the sleeping family awoke, the hay on the roof had caught fire and it was impossible to douse the flames. The couple managed to bring two children out to safety.
Their other five children, whose ages were between three-and-a-half and 11 years, were burnt to death.
"We tried to douse the flames. But with the hay catching fire, it was impossible," a local said. "We managed to bring four of them out to safety. The five children died," he added.
The fortunate four are being treated for burns at a hospital.
Police are investigating the case. |
