Shimla, July 6 (IBNS): Thousands all over the world will get together on Tuesday to celebrate Tibetan spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama’s 75th birthday as he prepares to address a crowd of 5,000 at his temple in McLeod Ganj in Himachal Pradesh in north India.
This year, in a departure from tradition, the Dalai Lama is expected to greet well-wishers in person and for those unable to make it to the Himalayan hills, the event will streamed live on his website.
Events have been planned across continents, as Tibetan communities in Australia, Europe and North America celebrate the day through gatherings and cultural programmes.
On the Internet, birthday wishes are flooding in through online campaigns and also through social networking sites Twitter and Facebook, both of which host active accounts in the spiritual leader’s name.
The Nobel laureate, who has been in exile in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh for the past 51 years after he fled Tibet following a failed uprising against the Chinese government, maintains that he demands autonomy and not independence for Tibet.
He also maintains a hectic schedule of travel, staying away from his hometown-in-exile for half of a calendar year, visiting nations and meeting people.
Despite being in apparent good health, with passing years the buzz about his succession grows louder.
However, in a recent interview to NDTV news channel, the Dalai Lama has denied rumours of choosing a successor any time soon.
“I am in good health now,” he said.
