New Delhi, Nov 24 (IBNS): Social activist-turned-politician Arvind Kejriwal’s party has been named the Aam Aadmi Party, which along with its constitution will be launched later on Saturday, media reports said.
Raising the pitch of their fight against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government over their core issue of graft, the name is seen as a dig at the popular “aam aadmi” (common man) motif of the ruling party, reports said.
However the name, which was reportedly finalised at a meeting led by Kejriwal and his activist colleague Prashant Bhushan, a Supreme Court lawyer, at a meeting in the Delhi, was not confirmed by party officials yet.
“Nearly 300-350 common people will come together to discuss on issues like the name of the party which will be non-dynastic in nature,” Kejriwal had earlier said.
The meeting was the first of its national council and the members were expected to ratify the name and elect a 30-member national executive.
The party is expected to be officially launched at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Nov 26 however the formalities with the Election Commission could take four-five months before the party is registered, reports said.
