New Delhi, Nov 20 (IBNS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday said it was open to bringing its own no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh government, setting the stage for a stormy Winter session of the Parliament.
At the end of a 90-minute meeting, the BJP and its allies, members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), also called for a discussion on foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail under a rule that allows voting.
"(The) NDA will move a resolution under voting provisions seeking disapproval of the government's decision (to permit FDI in multi-brand retail) and urging the government to withdraw the decision,” the Opposition group said.
"This government has failed on all the fronts and the time has come for it go. The NDA would consult all political parties to explore the possibility of a no-confidence motion against the government," the statement read out by BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
The statement came after top BJP leaders met at party patriarch L K Advani's residence earlier in the day to finalise the party's strategy to corner the government for the Winter Session of Parliament that begins on Nov 22.
The party also discussed Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo's proposal to move a no-trust motion against the Congress-led UPA government.
"Party has formed an opinion. However, we still have to discuss it with the NDA allies," Prasad had earlier told reporters.
"We are meeting with our NDA allies this evening after which we will convey our decision to you," he said.
On Monday, the BJP welcomed Mamata's plan to bring a no-confidence motion against the UPA government during the Winter Session of the Parliament.
Senior BJP leader Balbir Punj told media: "We have all options open. We will coordinate with every political party, which is ready to resist the anti-people policies of this government."
"We will definitely coordinate with Mamata Banerjee and we welcome her initiative," he said.
Mamata has approached the BJP to support her no-confidence motion.
Mamata has 19 MPs and she needs 50 to introduce the motion in the Lok Sabha.
