Guwahati, Nov 15 (IBNS): A hardcore cadre of the Garo rebel group Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was killed in a gun battle in Goalpara district along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Thursday, police said.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of army and police had launched a search operation in Bamuni Panikhowa area under Krishnai police station in the district along Assam-Meghalaya border.
“A four member armed group of Garo rebels fired on the security personnel and bullets were exchanged, in which a GNLA cadre was killed on spot,” a top police official said.
Security forces recovered one 7.65 mm pistol, five rounds of live ammunition in possession of the slain militant.
Top police and army officials had rushed the spot and launched search operation to nab the fled militants.
The Garo rebel group and Paresh Baruah alias Paresh Asom led ULFA had recently set up at least eight camps along the Assam-Meghalaya and Meghalaya-Bangladesh border.
Meanwhile, security forces on Thursday also recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition belonging to the Garo rebel group in Guwahati, which were procured from Dimapur of Nagaland.
Security forces nabbed seven people including two GNLA cadres and two arms dealers with the seizing arms and ammunition.
A top official of Assam police said that GNLA was procuring arms from Myanmar with the help of NSCN (IM).
Assam police sounded high alert across the state ahead of protest day of ULFA on Nov 28.
