Guwahati, July 13 (IBNS) Police in Assam apprehended one more person in the teenager assault and molestation of Monday night in Guwahati street taking the total number of arrests to four, even as a nationwide outrage was witnessed after the incident was reported in national media.
Police have identified 12 people from the videos so far, officials said on Friday.
The teenaged girl in Assam's Guwahati was assaulted, stripped and molested by a large group of men for over half an hour on Monday night as police came almost half an hour later to rescue the girl.
Video of the humiliation and assault went viral online while it was captured by a local channel News Live first and later the national channels followed up.
The incident took place right near the state secretariat on GS Road and a journalist covering the incident said the girl was almost raped.
A police complaint was filed by the girl's mother.
Senior superintendent of police Apurba Jiban Barua told reporters that they would act strongly and punish the molesters.
The Class XI girl was coming from a city bar when she picked up a quarrel with some boys.
The boys soon attacked her and molested her for nearly half an hour.
Police came to the scene after almost half an hour since the girl's ordeal started.
Government officials admitted that the response time of the police should have been faster.
News Live managing editor Syed Zarir Hussain said their reporters first tried to stop the mob but later they feared being lynched and so informed police.
He said their reporters were outnumbered by the mob but at least the footage led to the arrests of the perpetrators.
"It is a shame that there was no outcry against the incident in rest of local media," he said.
"There is some kind of acceptance to this kind of behaviour. Social condemnation is required," said Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury.
She said the boys have to be counselled also beside being shamed publicly.
