Govt didn't seek comments of Cauvery basin states: Rawat

New Delhi, Dec 6 (IBNS) The Government has not sought the comments of Cauvery basin states on the inability of Karnataka to release 9000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu, said Union Water Resources Minister Harish Rawat.


In a written reply in Lok Sabha on Thursday, Rawat said: "During the 7th meeting of Cauvery River Authority (CRA) held on 19.9.2012 Chief Minister of Karnataka, while concluding his opening remarks, stated that Karnataka cannot afford any further releases though the obligation to release 10,000 cusecs per day upto 20.09.2012 will be adhered to."

"Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC) at its 30th meeting held on 15.11.2012decided that Tamil Nadu should receive 4.81 TMC of Water for a period from 16th November to 30th November, 2012. The decision of CMC has been complied with."

He said as per Interim Order of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT), Tamil Nadu should receive 137 TMC of water from June to September.

"As per the discharge observation at Billigundulu G&D Site of CWC, 39.37 TMC of water has been received by Tamil Nadu from June to September 2012. As per the normal inflows into four Karnataka reservoirs of Cauvery basin, the expected inflows from June to September is 257. 34 TMC whereas corresponding actual inflow is 151.39 TMC," said Rawat.

The minister said the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) at its meeting held on Sept 19 had directed State of Karnataka to release 9000 cusecs of water daily from Sept 20 to Oct 15 at Billigundulu.

"Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC) met three times on 11.10.2012, 31.10.2012 & 15.11.2012 under the chairmanship of Secretary (WR), Govt. of India during current water year. The flows reaching Tamil Nadu have been monitored on daily basis since September 20, 2012," he said.
