Guwahati, July 21 (IBNS): ULFA peace interlocutor PC Haldar arrived in Guwahati on Wednesday to prepare the grounds for initiating peace talks with the outfit.
A former Intelligence Bureau chief, Haldar was last week formally appointed by the Centre as the peace broker with the ULFA.
An old hand in the North East, he is already negotiating with other militant outfits of the region on behalf of the government.
Talking to reporters at the airport here, Haldar said he will be holding consultations with various stakeholders, including civil society leaders, during his stay.
“I am here to prepare the grounds for the talks and I shall be in consultation with the stakeholders,” he said, refusing to give any further details.
“Let’s wait and see how it progresses. I am here to make the beginning.”
Meanwhile, in a positive indication from the ULFA, the outfit’s senior leader and ideologue Bhimkanta Buragohain on Wednesday sounded optimistic on start of talks.
Talking to reporters while being produced in a court at Tezpur, he said the outfit will decide whether to sit for talks as per the provisions in its constitution.
To ULFA military chief Paresh Barua’s refusal to join the peace bandwagon so far, Buragohain said, “Paresh Barua is not Hitler. He shall have to abide by any decision taken within the bounds of the constitution.”
