Ahmedabad, July 21 (IBNS): A Right to Information (RTI) activist was gunned down by unidentified men here near the Gujarat High Court on Tuesday evening, media reports said.
The victim, Amit Jethwa, had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against alleged illegal mining in the Gir Sanctuary, which is said to be backed by some politicians.
"The murder happened in the evening between 8:30 and 8:45 in the Sola police station area. Further investigation is on," Joint Commissioner of Police, Satish Sharma, said.
According to reports, Jethwa's petition accused Junagadh BJP MP Dinubhai Boghabhai Solanki and his relatives of carrying out alleged mining activities in Una and Kodinar areas of Saurashtra.
The Solankis were also running illegal mines and stone crushers in a village by the Gir forests, the PIL added.
