India Blooms News Service

Kolkata Oct 7 (IBNS): Bengal theatre group Sudrak Wednesday organised a seven day art exhibition Sudrak Utsav 2012 to commemorate the successful completion of 35 years by the group.

The exhibition comprised of painting, sculptures and exhibitions of some very renowned artists from Kolkata.

Among the artists whose works were exhibited in Sudrak Utsav were Ganesh Haloi, Wasim Kapoor, Jogen Chowdhury, Ramananda Bandyopadhyay, Eleena Banik with others.

Sudrak Utsav was inaugurated by renowned painter Ramananda Bandyopdhyay.

According to theater person Debashis Majumdar, “Theatre goes with painting hands in hand. So for the last 3 years we are celebrating Sudrak Utsav, and this is its 4th year. To convey regard to this famous theatre group we have arranged this theatre festival every year.”

One of the aritists Eleena Banik said that the popularity of art and culture has been diminishing day by day as the there is no inter-discipline among the intellectuals themselves.

She said theatre and art is related to nature so people should show some concern to this and government should take some necessary steps.

“As the remuneration in theatre is very low, it is being very difficult to keep in touch with common people and grow love for the theatre and as a result of this we find art exhibitions with almost empty gallaries” added Banik.

Famous writer Navbanita Dev Sen will inaugurate Sudrak Natya Utsav at Academy of Fine Arts on Oct 5 with the staging of Draupadi, Dahananta, Apeksha and Dhaboman etc not only with the direction of famous dramatists over here but also from the Bangladesh and North Eastern.

At its inaugural day Sudrak Samman 2012 will be conferred on artists like Sanat Kar, Late Mohit Chattopdhyay, Kaushik Sen, Suman Mukhopadyay, Arpita Ghosh, and Adhikary Kaushik for their contribution in theatre.
