‘Kolkata has huge tourism buyers from SE Asia’

Kolkata, Jan 28 (IBNS) Kolkata and Eastern India have huge tourism buyers from South East Asia, said West Bengal Tourism minister Manabendra Mukherjee.
He was speaking at Destination East 2009- a two day Conference and Buyer Seller Meet organized by CII Eastern Region-here.
“Kolkata and Eastern India have huge buyers of tourism from South East Asia and one thousand tourists travel to these parts every month. Onus should be furthered by the state governments to promote tourism in the Eastern States,” Mukherjee said.
Manab Pal, Chairman, Tourism subcommittee, CII Eastern Region, said the major objective of Destination East is to focus on the Eastern Indian states as world – class tourism destinations.
“The conference cum business meetings will not only give an opportunity to Eastern India to interact with foreign buyers, registered Indian sellers, investors, travel writers and journalists and make serious business,” Pal said.
Mukul Somany, Chairman, CII Eastern Region, Joint Managing Director Hindustan National Glass and Industries Ltd. said, tourism in West Bengal has been doing well despite the recent recession.
“Both inflow and outflow of the tourists from the state is higher than the national average. West Bengal figures in the top five states of the country in tourism.
“West Bengal can create a roadmap for eco-tourism by offering a plethora of places to be visited by tourists craving for the taste of eco-tourism,” Somany said.
