Toyota regains No. 1 sales rank

India Blooms News Service

Tokyo, Jan 28 (IBNS): Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor has reclaimed the position of the worlds top selling automaker in 2012, edging past American and German rivals General Motors and Volkswagen.

Toyota on Monday said it sold a record 9.75 million vehicles group-wide around the world last year, a gain of 22.6 percent from a year ago.

The figure put the company back in the No. 1 position worldwide that it lost in 2011 after holding the crown from 2008 through 2010.

The company's nearest rivals, GM and Volkswagen, who had outperformed the Japanese giant for the last two years, sold 9.28 million vehicles and 9.07 million vehicles respectively in 2012.

Toyota, which also counts sales of its group brands Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors, aims to sell 9.91 million vehicles globally in 2013, up 1.6 percent from 2012.
