Kolkata, Dec 8 (IBNS): Chief Executive Officer and Director of Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd Subrata Paul speaking at the PanIIT Alumni Global Conference 2012 on Saturday said that instead of shying away from rapid urbanisation of the society, urban development needs to be pursued actively.
"The issue is you have to push on the urban development," he said while addressing the conference on 'Investment in rural and urban development'.
"The politicians will say 'stop people from moving from rural areas to urban areas,' but the issue is to focus on urbanisation," he said.
Speaking on ways to improve urbanisation, he said, "You have to add on a Chicago every year to our country."
He said the country has to build a minimum of 40 to 50 cities in 22 years to sustain the current rate of urbanisation.
"New airports can become centers around which new cities can develop," he said.
"We need to focus on major city connectivity like high speed corridors," he added.
Eminent personalities including Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry's (CII) National Task Force on Regulatory Framework in Infrastructure Vinayak Chatterjee were also present at the conference.
The PanIIT Alumni Global conference 2012 started in Kolkata on Friday and will continue till Dec 9.
The PanIIT Alumni Association was formed in 2002 to gather all graduating IITians from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) since 1955 under one umbrella and engage them in initiatives of common interest.
